Retiring to Switzerland | Expats in Switzerland

Every year, around 25,000 people of retirement age leave the UK to live abroad. Most of those emigrate to Australia or countries within the EU, but a few choose Switzerland as their ideal place to retire.

Switzerland is one of the top rated countries among British expats, not least for its beautiful scenery and excellent transport system. The cost of living is higher, with prices for most items being significantly higher than elsewhere on the continent, but this isn’t always a deterrent.
Switzerland has a very low crime rate, low taxes, clean environment, great recreation and leisure facilities and of course, skiing.
Although there is no visa requirement for British passport holders to enter Switzerland, there are some mandatory requirements if you intend to live there.
There are some differences between moving to Switzerland to work and moving there to retire. For instance, if you are moving there to retire, you will need to be over 55 and no longer looking for work either in Switzerland or elsewhere. You will need to have close personal ties, such as family members in the country, a history of frequent stays or past residency. You must also have the necessary financial resources.
If you are entitled to a UK State Pension, you will need to contact the International Pension Centre in the UK, so you can still receive your pension while living in Switzerland. UK pension credit is not payable in Switzerland. You should contact the IPC early in your preparation process.
You will also need to have health insurance and accident insurance. In Switzerland, it is mandatory for employers to provide accident insurance, but if you are retired you will need to purchase this yourself.
Considering the excellent healthcare in Switzerland, insurance policies are quite reasonably priced, but it is still worth shopping around for the best policy to suit retirees.
Once you have made the decision to move to Switzerland, you should contact a reputable removals company to relocate all your belongings. Contacting a moving company can be done before you have a destination address as pricing and availability are largely dependent on how much is to be moved and how much packing and export wrapping is involved.
Central Moves is an experienced European removals company and a member of the BAR, FEDEMAC, AIM and Eurovan. They offer services ranging from transporting a few items to full house removals, including packing, unpacking and even transporting the family car.

Living in Switzerland

Switzerland’s famous tax breaks for rich foreigners have reportedly drawn many a minted magnate in recent years. In 1976, Switzerland became home to Swedish Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad of Sweden, now the country’s richest resident.
Switzerland has four national languages including French, German, Italian and Rhaeto-Romantsch. The latter has Latin roots. Proficiency in the national languages is decreasing in favour of English. Switzerland has a population of about 8 million. About 5 million of them live in the Swiss Plateau in between the Jura Mountains and the Swiss Alps. Among them are the two global cities and economic centres of Zürich and Geneva, whose influence can be seen not only inSwitzerland but all over the world. Zürich and Geneva have been ranked among cities with highest quality of life in the world, hence why so many expats choose to move to Switzerland. Foreigners account for around 23 percent of the population.
More and more Expats are choosing to retire to Switzerland, the number of elderly people is increasing: In 2012, 17 percent of the population was 65 or over. As at 2012, life expectancy at birth is 80.5 years for men and 84.7 years for women.

Moving to Switzerland

Obtaining a permit to work in Switzerland depends on many factors, including where you are from, the skills you have:
  1. Switzerland has a dual system for allowing foreigners to work while in the country. The first concerns citizens from the European Union and/or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), who are generally allowed to come to Switzerland for three months while they look for work. The period can be extended to six months during an active job hunt.
  2. The second is for citizens of all other countries (so-called Third States). Citizens from these countries must have a guaranteed work contract from an employer as well as the appropriate work visa before entering the country. Having a job offer alone is not enough to guarantee a permit.
  3. Family members of a permit holder are allowed to stay and reside in Switzerland as well, regardless of nationality. Family members include a spouse, descendants under age 21 or dependents over whom custody or care is granted, regardless of age.
Cantonal authorities are responsible for issuing permits. For more  information, please visit the Federal Migration Office website.
You must take out insurance with a Swiss health insurance company no later than 3 months after arriving or beginning work in Switzerland. Cross-border commuters domiciled in certain EU states have the option of taking out insurance in their country of residence instead of Switzerland. Read the detailed information on health insurance for foreigners in Switzerland.
